A national math enrichment, coaching and competition program, MATHCOUNTS heightens student interest in mathematics by making math achievement as challenging, exciting and prestigious as a school sport. Each year, MATHCOUNTS develops an entirely new MATHCOUNTS School Handbook and provides every U.S. middle school with a complimentary copy of these 300 problems meeting National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) standards for grades 6-8.

After several months of coaching by a teacher or other volunteer, more than 6,000 schools select students to compete as teams and individuals in one of more than 500 written and oral competitions held nationwide in February. Winners progress to the State Competition with results there determining the top four students and top coach who earn the honor of representing their state or overseas team at the National Competition in May. At all levels, MATHCOUNTS challenges students’ math skills, develops their self-confidence and rewards them for their achievement.

President George W. Bush and former Presidents Clinton, Bush and Reagan have all recognized MATHCOUNTS in White House ceremonies. This program has received two White House citations as an outstanding private sector initiative. Also, ESPN has broadcast both the 2003 and 2004 National Competitions.
