The Balanced Equation … A New Formula for Classroom ChemistryIn the world of high school chemistry, lectures and lab experiments may be the first things that come to mind. But now, Dow is changing that formula with the introduction of The Balanced Equation, a science curriculum that embraces discussion, inquiry and innovative thinking while presenting the concepts of global sustainability and sustainable chemistry. Dow partnered with The Keystone Center for Education to develop The Balanced Equation lesson plans. Dow chose to support the development of The Balanced Equation to demonstrate the unique relationship where chemistry and sustainability can come together to help solve some of the challenges of the world. “This partnership with Dow is unique because Dow brings more than just philanthropic giving,” says Peter Adler, Ph. D, president and CEO of The Keystone Center. “The technical consulting and scientific know-how provided by Dow gives the module a real world perspective we could not have otherwise.” “At Dow, we know sustainable chemistry as a catalyst for change,” said Neil Hawkins, vice president, Sustainability and a board member of The Keystone Center. “Sustainable chemistry is an approach to innovative problem-solving and finding long-term solutions to critical global challenges.” “If this module can help students understand that, and give students enthusiasm for being part of the solution, then our efforts have been worth it. We hope thousands of students can benefit from this,” he says. In the end, educators know that their students are helping to solve the problems of our future. It’s this human element that excites them. For more information about The Balanced Equation contact Sandy Dust at sdust@dow.com.
