Careers in Science

Profile: Jennifer

JenniferGrowing up near one of Dow's manufacturing locations, I knew that Dow was involved in making chemical and plastic products, but didn't think Dow's products had anything to do with my life. Wow, was I ever wrong! When I was in college, I joined Dow as a co-op and learned that their products make things I use every day possible. The CDs I listen to, shampoo I wash my hair with, and food I eat are all made better by Dow.

During my junior year of college, I had the opportunity to study in Europe. That was a fantastic experience! I learned a lot about different cultures by working with students from other countries. Did you know that Dow is the most global chemical company? Dow has locations around the world and looks for people with good foreign language skills.

As a science and technology company, Dow provides opportunities for students studying engineering and other areas related to science, but that's not all. Co-op and intern positions are available for students like me who are interested in other areas, such as business, finance, and Information Technology.

When I returned from Europe, Dow hired me as a Public Affairs intern. Internships are a great way to learn more about a company and decide if an area of study is right for you. Dow challenged me with exciting projects that were meaningful and important to the company. Some of the other interns I met worked on making existing products and creating new ones that we use today.

My co-workers helped me to learn and develop skills that I know will be important to my future. They also spent time with me to talk about career development and opportunities based on my interests. If you're interested in learning more about careers in science, I would encourage you to look through the Skill Sets for the Next Generation and talk to your teacher or counselor about science programs in college.
