Skill Sets for the Next Generation

Did You Know...

A good education will enable you to get a job, maintain your health, increase personal income, and have greater choice in decisions that affect your life. Many students today are graduating from high school and college without the necessary skills to compete for the job they desire.

Having a solid understanding of math and science is very important, along with knowing how to use the latest technologies, such as computers and various programs. However, some of the most sought-after skills aren’t things you can read about in a book. They include the ability to communicate both orally and in writing, critical thinking skills to solve problems, and the ability to work with groups in a team environment.

Learning and developing these skills is important to your overall success. Today’s work environment requires students to have the ability to communicate their ideas and to understand the technologies available to get their thoughts across. Students need to develop reasoning skills to understand challenges in the work environment and solve problems.

There are few, if any, jobs that do not require consulting with others or working as part of a team to accomplish the task at hand. Understanding diversity and working with others whose background and views are different from your own is very important when you’re part of a team. It’s also important to be flexible and keep a positive attitude, especially when things change or turn out differently than planned.

Our teachers and counselors are a critical resource to help students see the connections between skills and knowledge they are developing in school and future careers by using real-world examples in instruction. They can help you understand the need for advanced skills and education for future work.
