Don’t Be a Beach Bum

Trash on the Beach is a Bummer: Lesson Plan and Activities
Trash has become a major problem on beaches and coastal areas around the world. The immensity of the world's oceans has led many people to think that the oceans can safely absorb at least some amounts of trash and other wastes.

Trash and other marine debris have become more than an eyesore for the world's waterways — it is having a serious impact on wildlife, the environment and the economy. Thousands of marine animals are tangled in or injured by debris every year. Coastal communities are forced to spend resources on clean-up, or risk losing tourist dollars. Beach raking threatens wildlife in some areas, and the fishing industry spends thousands of dollars to repair vessels that are damaged by debris. But it doesn't have to be that way.

Dow's Don't Be a Beach Bum learning guide and activities focus on ways that everyone can help — through awareness, action and responsible living. Although this guide is primarily intended for middle school classrooms, the lesson plans can be adapted for community groups, service clubs or families.

Don't Be a Beach Bum learning guide and activities include:
